If the clearly mythological dimension of the Ascension is supposed to prevent us from taking it seriously, it is hard to see why the same dimension doesn’t prevent us from celebrating all the other major Christian festivals. Consider Christmas (virgin birth, angels appearing to Zachariah, Mary and the shepherds, a star which moves around the sky to guide the wise men). Consider Good Friday (sudden darkness at the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion, an earthquake, rocks which break open, the Veil of the Temple torn in two, tombs opening and their dead entering Jerusalem).

Berdyaev’s family belonged to the military aristocracy and was tolerant of his subversive and socialist philosophical and political ideas. Because of these ideas, he was successively imprisoned, expelled from university, allowed parole, then banished for three years in eastern Russia. Influenced by Marxism (whose materialism he did not share), Berdyaev grew steadily closer to Christianity, although he never lost a sense of the priority of social justice.
